Is a Jansport backpack considered a "personal item"?

Most airlines do not publish personal item size allowances, but many airlines limit the size of your personal item to 36 lineal inches (h+w+l). If the size of your backpack is within the 36 lineal inch limit, you should be okay. You can always call United to be sure.
